Its 1 am and am fucking awake

Posted on

I was up all night yesterday because the gym workout was pretty intense and I was sore. I tried this new exercise where you hold dumb bells in each hand and raise your shoulders and drop them down. Sounds harmless, right? Well, it was killing. I had to use 10 kg weights in each hand because someone else was using the 8 kg ones.
I slept at 4 am last night and was so sure will be hungover all day. You see… Am 31 and staying up after 10 pm does not suit my body. I had even planned to keep awake all night and go for a run at 5 am but that sadly did not happen. So today I slept at 7.30 pm to catch up on lost sleep. KC was dumb founded when I told him am going to sleep and don’t plan to wake up. He must have thought his life is so over if this is going to be my bedtime every night. I guess giving up on pizzas… Changing food habits… No daaru… Dinner by 7 pm are things he can reconcile with but THIS is divorce material. But KC being… KC he tried to turn in at 7.30 pm… But quickly got bored (being a Gemini and all) and went back to playing and watching cricket.

There is this new thing where he puts a cricket ball in a sock (its nothing perverted, I swear) and hangs that with a rope on a fan. And then he hits the ball with his bat (no puns intended). I don’t get the logic of it, of course. But KC has stopped explaining cricket to me because clearly am not interested and he will only be wasting his breath. BUT thats the normal part. The weird part is he hangs the thing in the living room… we have a spare room and a huge balcony but he wants to play cricket in the middle of the living room.

But this is not what I wanted to write about. It is about my Mumbai trip. I travelled to Mumbai and Pune for work this month because I had no where else to travel to. In the last 1 year I have covered below cities
– AP : Hyderabad, Vijaywada and Guntur
– Bangalore
– Mumbai
– Amravati
– Raipur
– Punjab – Zirakhpur, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jallandhar
– MP – Indore, Bhopal

Next on my list is Lucknow and Meerut. Hopefully, the trip will materialize in Oct.

I was in Mumbai for 2 days and looking forward to staying at the company guesthouse because Fitnessfirst gym is right opposite and I would get a few workouts in. Unfortunately, it was full and I had to stay at Ramada Juhu. The hotel sucked… The rooms smelled bad, b’fast was pretty bad, food was too expensive and my ex manager/mentor (who I respect a lot) warned me that the area is an up market red light. Great!!!
I like visiting Mumbai since I don’t have to deal with how mind fucked it is on a daily basis. I can take the dirt, pollution, traffic for 2 days. Also, I get to do fun things on a week night and I never did that when I lived there. The first night I tried to convince my friends to watch the Improvisers at Laugh Club (Palladium Mall) with me. I was missing Kanan’s stand up at Gurgaon and decided to catch him at Mumbai. My friends were sceptical but who can turn down a show with cute AND funny guys. It is always a winning combo. The show rocked. Abish, Kannan, Kenneth and Kaneez had us in splits. The entire show was improvised like in ‘Whose line is it anyway’ and was super awesome.

*I had to switch to the laptop from the phone app because the post is too long for the app*

The next day I travelled on the Mumbai metro and was quite impressed. There were no Marathi announcements on the metro which is strange and no national anthem playing at stations. Weird!!! A particular political party (which I don’t want to name and go to prison) is clearly losing its hold. You won’t get the joke if you haven’t stayed in Mumbai.

Lunch was mutton biryani at Zaffran at R City Mall, Ghatkopar. Am not a mutton fan but this biryani is to die for. After finishing work my colleagues and I headed back to the mall for a bite of red velvet pastry at Rolling Pin. It is the best red velvet I have eaten in my life.

My friends (all ex colleagues) and I planned to meet at Vogue Fashion Night Out at Palladium Mall. FNO is becoming the biggest fashion event in recent years. Basically, stores at open all night (6 pm -12 am) and offer discounts/food/drinks etc etc. Example, Diesel store had a tattoo artist… not the fake kinds but the real ones… Kiehls (my favorite personal care brand but so freaking expensive) had popcorn and beer… Inglot (another favorite make up brand) had free gifts on a purchase.. Vero Moda had a tarot reader and so on and so forth. I have never seen so many well dressed people in Mumbai at one place. There was also a pop up store which featured leading designers’ clothes and there was a long, long, long queue to enter it. I think they were letting in a limited number of people at a time. Deepika Padukone, Neha Dhupia and Kalki graced their presence late at night. But we had no shopping plans and the discounts were not exciting enough to loosen our purse strings so we left around 9 pm. It was the 7th day of Visarjan in Mumbai which is the 2nd worst day to be on the roads… the worst being 11th day of visarjan. Point to note- I learned this info on that particular day and was oblivious to it despite having lived in Mumbai for 3 years and being married to a Marathi.

My friend tried to convince me to travel in the local train but Juhu is where visarjan happens and I was going to get stuck in traffic one way or the other so decided to take a cab. It took me 1 hour from Lower Parel to Juhu which is impressive. The arrangement was pretty good… cops were stationed everywhere… and if a road was blocked for the procession… alternate routes were open. Even though the road outside Ramada was blocked with trucks there were no hassles in reaching the hotel. I don’t know how I missed all the Ganesh Chaturthi buzz when in Mumbai.

There are so many people I would like to meet when in Mumbai but then limited time means I need to prioritise. I generally end up meeting my ex colleagues. It was so much fun working in a team of 10 people. We had some fun times. All I remember now is the laughter… the jokes… cafeteria breaks… gossips… chai suta sessions. I will forever be grateful to my previous organization for giving me some great friends and a very great mentor.

I was in Pune for a day and wanted to catch up with Khushi. She is one of my best friends and we had lost touch recently. I really, really wanted to see her. She helped and supported me during one of the worst times of my life. I used to stay over at her house at A’bad every 2 weekends when I was in sales at Rajkot. She helped me with my wedding shopping… if it hadn’t been for her I would have gotten married in jeans. Not that that is a bad thing… atleast my wedding photos would have come out nice. Right now the wedding photos have been buried deep in a folder so nobody can accidentally find them. She could not attend my wedding because of her eye operation. RT was my only friend at the wedding… thankfully, a lot of people turned up at the after party- Dhruv, Abhinav, Rishabh, Ashwin, Priaa… and of course RT.

It is so so so nice meeting people you know for the longest time. It doesn’t matter where you left off the conversation … there are no pauses when you meet them.

The flight back was horrendous. KC and I had made dinner plans since I would be home by 7 pm. Guess what? I landed at 8 pm because the flight was delayed. And that is not the bad part. At 5.30 (we were supposed to take off at 4.30 pm and had boarded on time) they announced that the flight will not take off but wouldn’t let us off the plane. Finally at 6 pm they fixed the problem and we took off. I reached home around 9 pm, promptly ordered dinner from Biryani Blues which never got delivered because the delivery guy did not want to venture outdoors in the rain and we went to bed hungry, tired and extremely irritated. Yes… I made Spicejet and Biryani Blues apologize for ruining my Friday night plans. More power to social media- specifically twitter and zomato.

Thats it biatches… am off to bed. Maybe I can sneak in an episode of ‘The Office’??? C’mon… its only 20 mins.
